Recovering the historic memory of places, from the landscape to the matter. The restoration of the Town Hall of Pozzuolo Martesana — a symbol building of the town — is articulated on three fronts: the façade, the park and the lighting. The terrazzo grit of the cornices comes back to light after years of decay, while the plastered part is repainted according to the original colours found in period documentation. The park reclaims its lost pathways and welcomes new plantings of azaleas, Japanese maple and lily-of-the-valley borders; lanterns, LED bollards and reinforced-concrete Viabizzuno fittings draw the night-time light.
The themes of the recovery project. The project involved work on three distinct fronts: the recovery of the façades, the recovery of the park and the lighting project of both, for the splendid Town Hall building that is the symbol of the town of Pozzuolo Martesana.
The façade recovery project. Conservative restoration works were carried out on the terrazzo grit of the cornices and the window borders, cleaned of the decay accumulated over the years, while the plastered part of the façade was restored and repainted according to the original colours, found in period documentation.
The park recovery project. The second area of the project was the recovery of the park, left abandoned for many years and in a state of complete decay, despite being full of important centuries-old trees. Moreover, many of the original passages and pathways had disappeared, distorting the design of the landscape. The two flower beds at the entrance had all the planting part in an advanced state of decay. For this reason, steel plates were inserted to delimit the gravel paths from the flower beds. The flower beds were re-planted and new plantings of azaleas and Japanese maple were inserted, as well as new lily-of-the-valley borders. New benches, bins and bicycle racks were also installed.
The lighting project. The third and final part of the project concerned the lighting of the façade and the park. All the façade entrances were lit with lantern-style fittings that synthesised the relationship between past and present. On the main façades, inside and out, linear fittings were inserted on the cornices to highlight the solid-and-void relationship of the façade, while spotlights were placed to mark the little tower visible from the park. All the park paths were highlighted by metal LED bollards, except the main pathway, which was lit with reinforced-concrete fittings produced by Viabizzuno, like the lanterns. Finally, all the most important plants in the park have dedicated lighting.
