A 16th-century noble palazzo in the heart of Piacenza rediscovers its original vocation: living. The restoration and refunctioning project of Palazzo San Severino does not choose the path of mimicry, but that of a declared dialogue between eras. The typological and distributive characters of the sixteenth-century layout are fully preserved, while the new technological insertions speak a contemporary language, recognisable, never apologetic. Historic stratigraphies, wooden window frames and original shutters tell the story of the palazzo; systems, insulation and new openings bring it into the present.
The project. The project involves the conservative restoration and refunctioning of Palazzo San Severino, reconverting it according to its original, residential function.
This will happen through a process that fully maintains the typological and distributive characters of the original layout. The insertion of the primary and technological services, needed for a refunctioning of this kind, will happen through an insertion that is harmonious in typology but sharp in language, in the evident contrast between old and contemporary.
All the new technological systems will be made in plasterboard lining cavities of the walls, which will also allow the proper dehumidification of the load-bearing walls, with particular attention to the integration of the heating and electrical systems.
The roof will be restored, keeping the original cover and under tiles, but inserting proper insulation suited to the new function. In the street-facing body, a cut will be integrated to allow light to pass in keeping with the new residential functions.
The façades will be conserved, investigating the stratigraphies and sedimentations, conserving the wooden window frames and the existing shutters.
