What is Retail Design?
Retail Design is a specific branch of interior design. Retail Design refers to the design of spaces and places dedicated to sales. In the design process, it is necessary to get in tune with the company, the production reality for which the flagship store or showroom must be created, to know the food that must be sold or the way in which the garment to be displayed is made. Deeply understanding the corporate and production reality is a fundamental step that every good designer must take to get in tune with their client, to understand the roots in order to help the entire tree grow and therefore help the brand expand.
Points of sale must be able to convey, through spaces, colors, and aesthetic and functional choices, the company philosophy. Every entrepreneur wants their point of sale to reflect their brand and for there to be a strong connection between the product and the conceived space.
Which aspect is important in Retail Design?
A fundamental phase of Retail Design is the choice and study of the circulation paths that the customer will follow within the point of sale. The variations are multiple and are strongly connected to what must be sold or displayed. The designer therefore takes on the role of mediator between the company and the consumer, and must be able to guide the company in creating a functional and pleasant sales space that builds customer loyalty, showcases and sells the product. It is necessary to understand the consumer’s needs, who the competitors on the market are for the same product category, and what the characteristics of the country and city hosting the store are. Designing a flagship store, a retail store, or a pizzeria, a fast food restaurant or a florist requires particular attention to all the aspects we have described. Every experience is unique—even in the seriality of franchising where the layout as a matrix is repeated over and over, flexibility and attention to detail become fundamental.
