When a façade becomes a newspaper page: Corriere at Expo 2015

A pit stop of news in steel and glass on the Decumanus of Expo 2015. 23bassi developed the preliminary design of the Corriere della Sera pavilion through a series of iterations: from the initial opaque, ceramic-clad solution, the façade is progressively dematerialised until it becomes a steel-and-glass system conceived as a window open onto what is happening at Expo and in the world, with an internal LED wall dedicated to breaking news. The final rationalisation makes façade and structure coincide in three frame modules: a white / dark-grey dualism that recalls the two-tone pages of the newspaper.

The project, carried out at preliminary stage, involved designing the pavilion for Corriere della Sera within Expo 2015, on the Decumanus.

Several different design solutions were explored, tied to the evolving brief and the project budget.

From an initial preliminary solution, entirely opaque and clad in ceramic, the design moved towards a progressive dematerialisation of the façade, in steel and glass, conceived with modular elements designed as true windows onto the news, linked to what was happening at Expo and in the world. The project also included an internal LED wall scrolling Corriere della Sera’s breaking news.

Subsequent steps of simplification and rationalisation led to a modular system in which façade and structure coincide. The modular frame façade, made up of three module types, allows fast assembly and bench fabrication of the parts. The components are designed to rest on a mass-produced prefabricated foundation and to be closed with a flat roof. Short assembly and disassembly times are fundamental requirements of this prototype.

The façade is composed of three modules joined together. The largest module, 110 cm wide, is filled alternately with a translucent panel, polycarbonate or clear glass. The splaying of the modules is intended to animate the façade with a play of light and shadow. The white-based palette is interrupted by the insertion of narrower, dark-grey modules that recall the two-tone dualism of the newspaper’s pages.
