Seven beds in a 48-square-metre Milanese studio flat

Seven beds in 48 square metres. Casa blue is back was born from the challenge of a client who wanted a dynamic, flexible, contemporary studio flat, able to host as many people as possible without giving up design. The answer is a furnishing system that divides, hides and orders the space: a raised bed platform that conceals a second bed and a storage hold beneath it, a wall of adjustable louvres with a swivelling TV, a disappearing kitchen that, closed, looks like a sideboard, and three living-area elements that transform. On the floor, a woven blue tatami that gives the project its name.

Goal. The brief was clear: to have a dynamic, flexible, configurable flat, liveable according to contemporary ways of living. The client wanted a trendy, design-led flat, with the possibility of having as many beds as possible (7 beds in 48 sqm).

Bed platform. Given the available height, the idea was to put the bed on a raised platform. This brought two advantages: first, beneath it space was created to host a single bed when needed; and second, under the double bed, via a trapdoor, you reach a real storage hold housing the folding chairs of the console table. The bed platform is divided from the living area by a wall of louvres, partly fixed and partly adjustable, which also houses a swivelling television, so it can be watched both from the bed and from the living area.

Kitchen. The kitchen is a disappearing one. We designed a kitchen that, closed, looks like a sideboard but, open, integrates all the primary functions, from the induction hob to the sink to the fridge, including a pull-out snack table for breakfast. Above, the wall-unit part is made of a painted-metal structure housing lacquered compartments, which have the same language as the stool-bedside-tables in the living area.

Living area. The living area is furnished with three transformable elements. The Ozzio console table can, when needed, become a table for even 8 or 10 people, extending as desired. The two Virgola armchairs by Campeggi are perfect because they can become a two-seater sofa or two single sofa-beds.

Materials. The floor is in woven PVC tatami by Liuni, blue, which contrasts with the brushed-cedar melamine panels by Cleaf. The living-area ceiling was left in its original rough state, while the other zones were lowered with plasterboard to allow the services to run through.
